La Vera Cucina: Suffern is NOT the place for pizza. *

March 4th, 2010

vera cucinaTo be fair, I did not order a regular slice here.  I had a Sicilian.  Perhaps I did that because the regular slices didn’t look too good. Anyway, the place is an attractive restaurant.  They even have a full bar.

The Sicilian I ordered had a crust that was as heavy as lead.  That is wrong.  Sicilian slices I believe should have a very light and yeasty crust. The sauce and cheese were OK.  I probably won’t go back here to order a regular slice unless there is a public outcry. Sorry. It’s in your hands.vera cucina slice

Il Villaggio: A nice downtown kind of place in Suffern.*

March 4th, 2010

villaggiaYou know I love pizza places that are not in strip malls.  Reminds me of my youth in Manhattan. I have been wanting to eat in here for a long time.  It’s right down the street from the amazing Lafayette movie theater, which is another thing that reminds me of my youth.  I’ve taken my kids here and they think it’s cool.  When I was a kid my dad used to take me to Lowe’s paradise in the Bronx, which reminded him of HIS youth.  Unfortunately the pizza here doesn’t remind me of anything particularly good.

It does look good, however, the crust is not tasty at all.  That’s a shame because there is a good balance of cheese and sauce and it is cooked well.

I should have ordered a slice of Grandma’s pizza which looked really good. (Not MY grandma’s, (both of them were the lousiest cooks) but generic grandma’s pizza which is kind of like a Margarita, with fresh mozzarella and basil, and a touch of garlic and parmigiana. villagio slice

Nicky’s Pizza and Deli: At least “Pizza” comes before “Deli” in the name. That’s a good sign. **

March 4th, 2010

pizza deliThis is certainly a non-descript looking place on the busiest area of west Rt. 59.  The name of the place isn’t even on the outside of the building.  I certainly hate driving around here.  I wasn’t even sure I got to all the places in the area.  I couldn’t stop at a couple of the strip malls because of all the aggressive traffic.

Anyway, the over-riding word for this pizza is “Garlic Powder.” Well, I guess that is two words, but there is a lot of garlic powder on this pie.  The crust is nice and thin, but almost too thin to support all the cheese and sauce they supply.   It is tasty though.

A word about Delis that serve pizza.  I have mentioned this before, that they are usually not that good, however, I would say that this place is more like a pizza place that is also a deli.  What makes me sure is that there were a bunch of pictures on the wall of Italian-American celebrities like Dean Martin, et al.  If only I could have gotten past the smell of the stale food that kind of permeates the place. pizza deli slice

Franks: Another pizza/lounge combo: *

February 24th, 2010

FranksFrank’s is right across the street from the International Food mart which is an incredible and incredibly cheap supermarket.  The reason I don’t shop there more often is that the traffic on rt 59 right around here is horrendous.  This strip mall in particular is almost impossible to find a place to park in.  Everyone doubles up, which means that some people get stuck.

Anyway, I went in here, and there was no-one behind the counter, so a guy who was waiting for some takeout food put a slice in the oven for me.  I assume he was friends with the owner.  I don’t know if he broke any health department rules, but it didn’t bother me.

This place I think also serves Latin food.  It had that smell.  The front of the place was really dark.  It looked like there was a lounge in the back that was totally dark.  I guess it doesn’t open until the evening.

The pizza was average or below.  It was edible though.  There was too much cheese, and the crust had the aftertaste of really cheap flour.  I didn’t finish my slice, because I was too busy going back to my Nonna’s slice that I was trying to avoid finishing because it was filling me up too quickly.  franks sliceMy Frank’s slice had a good flavor, but not compared to Nonna’s.

Franco’s Pizza. Great location, so it’s crowded. **

February 24th, 2010

FrancosLet me start off by saying that this place is almost right across the street from Nonna’s which I have rated 4 stars.  However, this place actually faces Rt. 59 so there is a much bigger crowd in here.  I suppose their rent must also be higher.

It’s a nicely appointed place.  The staff is friendly.  The pizza is decent.  I don’t really want to go into the particulars.  Perhaps the crust isn’t as crispy as it could be, or the brand of cheese isn’t the best, but that’s okay, because it is decent.  The slice was on the small side though.

An interesting thing about this place, is that the takeout menu was filled with ads for other establishments. (non restaurant mostly)  Actually the ads took up about 3/4 of the printable space, leaving room for a very short menu.

Nonna’s: Strange location, but Wow! ****

February 24th, 2010

nonnasThis seems to be a fairly new place.  Everything is spiffy.  I almost passed it because, while it is on Rt. 59, you can’t see it from the street.  You have to drive around to the back of this strip mall.  It’s near a sushi place I used to go to called U-Me sushi.

But what a place it is. It is huge, spotless, and well appointed.  They have a very interesting brick lined gas fired oven.  I’ve heard that story before, but this place really does it right.  There is flavor to boot in this pizza. The sauce has just the right piquancy.  The cheese is flavorful and well cooked.  The crust has just the right amount of char on the bottom.  I would say that this pie reaches the heights of my ideal (Sal’s in NYC) but for one reason: Perhaps the crust could use a touch more yeast flavor.  Other than that, I have no complaints.  I Heartily recommend this place, and I look forward to coming here many times in the future.  I just hope that their strange location doesn’t hurt their business.

Chuck E Cheese’s: This is as close as I can make myself get to this place. No Review.

Sheli’s II: Kosher Brick Oven Pizza and (Kosher?) Sushi? Dare I try it? No stars.

February 1st, 2010

Sheli's III’ve been fascinated by this place for years.  The joke is that I could take my Sushi loving wife here with the no-sushi loving kids and they would be satiated too without complaining of having to eat sushi.  Being that there were a bunch of kids in here, and yes, a couple of professional Japanese sushi chefs, I guess the concept has value.  Somehow I never got around to going in though.  But since I am a now a professional pizza blogger, I figured I had to.

I had passed the other one of this chain’s restaurants, and the thought of sushi and pizza (and cafe) as they put it there, just could not register, so I passed on it.  But I couldn’t pass this place because of what I said above.

Anyway, since the place is Kosher, I believe that they have to use certain ingredients that you normally wouldn’t want to put on pizza.  What you get is something that doesn’t taste like pizza.  Actually, since it is pizza I have to say that it is probably the worst pizza I have ever eaten.  This is even worse than the pizza at the Germond’s pool which is basically frozen cardboard warmed up under an ultraviolet light.

They know they use lousy tasting ingredients, because they try to doctor up the sauce with a bunch of spices, but trust me, it doesn’t help.   Even my kids who love the lousy Costco pizza are bound not to like this stuff.  Here is a picture:

need I say more?

need I say more?

There are also some tasteless onions on there trying unsuccessfully to save things.  I swear I could only stomach one and a half bites of this stuff.  If it wasn’t for the large population of Kosher keeping people in the neighborhood, I can’t imagine that they would stay in business.

Don’t get me wrong, I happen to be Jewish myself (mostly), but happen to consider that as far as restaurant food is concerned, nine times out of ten when you see “Kosher” it means “Bad” food.

Also, the brick oven is gas fired, so it doesn’t make much difference.  And by the way, besides the sushi chefs, they had a Hispanic guy making the pies.

Villa Rosa Pizzeria and TMT Sports Bar: An original concept. **

February 1st, 2010

Villa RosaWell, I went in here at lunchtime and the huge sports bar (in the back) was thankfully closed.  There was a pool table though.  It might be a good idea to keep that open during the daytime.  There was an avid pizza loving lunchtime crowd though.  It was much more crowded than the superior Peppe’s right across the street.  Maybe I can be wrong from time to time about pizza.  (Not likely because it was also more crowded than the inferior Mark’s)

There pizza did have some flavor, but had too much cheese which made it not as fun to eat.  Of the three places on this corner of Viola Road and Rt. 45, all three got different ratings:  *** for Peppe, ** for this place, and * for Marks.  Read on and you will see that the following place that I reviewed got yet a different number of stars.  Guess if that would be four or zero?  I’ll give you a hint.  They served Kosher pizza and sushi.

Anyway, Villa Rosa is a decent place.  If I was in the neighborhood I probably wouldn’t stop here again being that Peppe’s is right across the street, but hey, you never know. Villa Rosa Slice Here is an interesting hapenstance:  Check out the two menus from these two places across the street from each other.  They use the same graphic.  I wonder if they realize that their copy shop is not too creative. menus

Mark’s Pizza: tired and a little sad. *

February 1st, 2010

Marks I felt really sad when I walked in here.  Even before.  As you can see in the picture, the front door is hidden by the strange architecture.  Inside the lighting is dismal.  The place hasn’t been painted in decades.  The tables are rickety.

The people who work here work in silence.  They move slowly.  They only charge $2.00 bucks for a slice, but it is a dry slice at that.

I know this is irrelevant, but I don’t think I have ever heard of a “Mark’s Pizza” before.  Mark doesn’t strike me as a particularly Italian name.  That’s not to say that every pizza place has to be Italian sounding, but it helps.

I will say that there was one item on the good side.  Their crust was nicely thin, and it had a bit of flavor.  Unfortunately, the cheese and sauce didn’t.

Actually, this place really NEEDS a TV set.  That would at least give it a tiny bit of ambiance. Marks slice
